1. Open Heart towards God 神に向かって開かれた心

1 イエスが、ヘロデ王の時代に、ユダヤのベツレヘムでお生まれになったとき、見よ、東方の博士たちがエルサレムにやって来て、こう言った。
1 After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to
2 「ユダヤ人の王としてお生まれになった方はどこにおいでになりますか。私たちは、東のほうでその方の星を見たので、拝みにまいりました。」
2 and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his starbwhen it rose and have come to worship him.”
3 それを聞いて、ヘロデ王は恐れ惑った。エルサレム中の人も王と同様であった。
3 When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him.
4 そこで、王は、民の祭司長たち、学者たちをみな集めて、キリストはどこで生まれるのかと問いただした。
4 When he had called together all the people’s chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Messiah was to be born.
5 彼らは王に言った。「ユダヤのベツレヘムです。預言者によってこう書かれているからです。
5 “In Bethlehemin Judea,” they replied, “for this is what the prophet has written:
6 『ユダの地、ベツレヘム。あなたはユダを治める者たちの中で、決して一番小さくはない。わたしの民イスラエルを治める支配者が、あなたから出るのだから。』」
6 “ ‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.’”
7 そこで、ヘロデはひそかに博士たちを呼んで、彼らから星の出現の時間を突き止めた。
7 Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared.
8 そして、こう言って彼らをベツレヘムに送った。「行って幼子のことを詳しく調べ、わかったら知らせてもらいたい。私も行って拝むから。」
8 He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him.”
9 彼らは王の言ったことを聞いて出かけた。すると、見よ、東方で見た星が彼らを先導し、ついに幼子のおられる所まで進んで行き、その上にとどまった。
9 After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was.
10 その星を見て、彼らはこの上もなく喜んだ。
10 When they saw the star, they were overjoyed.
11 そしてその家に入って、母マリヤとともにおられる幼子を見、ひれ伏して拝んだ。そして、宝の箱をあけて、黄金、乳香、没薬を贈り物としてささげた。
11 On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.
12 それから、夢でヘロデのところへ戻るなという戒めを受けたので、別の道から自分の国へ帰って行った。
12 And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.
13 彼らが帰って行ったとき、見よ、主の使いが夢でヨセフに現れて言った。「立って、幼子とその母を連れ、エジプトへ逃げなさい。そして、私が知らせるまで、そこにいなさい。ヘロデがこの幼子を捜し出して殺そうとしています。」
13 When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up,” he said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.”
14 そこで、ヨセフは立って、夜のうちに幼子とその母を連れてエジプトに立ちのき、
14 So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt,
15 ヘロデが死ぬまでそこにいた。これは、主が預言者を通して、「わたしはエジプトから、わたしの子を呼び出した」と言われた事が成就するためであった。
15 where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: “Out of Egypt I called my son.”
16 その後、ヘロデは、博士たちにだまされたことがわかると、非常におこって、人をやって、ベツレヘムとその近辺の二歳以下の男の子をひとり残らず殺させた。その年齢は博士たちから突き止めておいた時間から割り出したのである。
16 When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi.
